8 of the Best Cocktail Bars in the U.S.

Harlowe is a throwback to the iconic bars of yesteryear in Hollywood, complete with antique furnishings and signature cocktails. Cocktails such as the Clementine, made with vodka, Aperol, lemon, and mandarin puree, were created by renowned New York City mixologist Dushan Zaric of Employees Only.

Axl Brose, with Scotch, Drambuie, honey, oatmeal cream, nutmeg, and egg yolk, is one of the more unusual cocktails on the menu of the chic and sophisticated Good Bar, which is located in the old Japanese Commercial Bank. Other famous riffs include the Darker Stormy, which is made with a ginger-stout reduction.

The Chestnut Club is an industrial-chic lounge with low lighting and sophisticated cocktails, including several takes on the classic gin-and-tonic inspired by Spain. A variation on this theme is the Café Paloma, which combines tequila, grapefruit, lime, and Aperol.

The hip cocktail den Rob Roy in Seattle serves drinks inspired by the 1970s, such as Anu Apte's Ginger Persuasion and Zane Harris' Aster Family Sour. 

Teardrop Cocktail Lounge (Portland, Oregon) 

The gastropub Spur's creative partnership has opened a second spot, Tavern Law, where you can get traditional cocktails, an extensive whiskey list, and posh bar nibbles like foie gras terrine. Needle & Thread is a bar on the second floor that makes specialty cocktails upon request; access is via a strong vault door.

Delicious delicacies, such as confit chicken with cotija cheese, are presented with cocktails crafted by the bartenders at Cure using droppers filled with housemade tinctures. 

Tavern Law (Seattle) 

Two old-school cocktail enthusiasts serve flips, brambles, bucks, and sours at Houston's Anvil Bar, housed in an old Bridgestone-Firestone tire business. They also host monthly themed cocktail seminars.
